The weather is positively sparkling, and if you don't have plans to enjoy the sapphire blue that is Leelanau's abundance of water, we'll help you make them. Here are a few of our favorite area beaches. Happy swimming!
Van's Beach: Leland
Arguably the most popular public access beach in Leland, Van's Beach is at the end of Cedar Street. Find Van's Garage, just south of the channel, and you are on your way. Keep your eyes peeled for the quintessential of souvenirs: petoskey stones!
North Beach: Leland
Stock up on snack essentials at the Merc before heading north past the Leland Harbor off of N. Lake Street (Go past Pearl Street to find the trail head on your left where William Street intersects) Both Van's Beach and North Beach are also known for their blue stones (called Blueys by the locals)—only found in Leland.
Nedow's Bay (Bartholomew Park): Leland
This protected little enclave on Lake Leelanau is shallow and warm with a boat launch, dock and picnic tables: perfect for littles who will enjoy the comings and goings of boats as well as the proximity of the yacht club next door. Find Nedow's Bay by heading down Pearl Street about 7 blocks past the Leland Country Club.
Schneider's Beach: Lake Leelanau
This little known Lake Leelanau public access beach is at the end of Popp Road (right off M-204) about 1.5 miles east of the village of Lake Leelanau. There is a sandy beach, picnic area and boat launch. Feel free to bring your 4-legged furry friends here!
Good Harbor Beach: Maple City
A jewel in the crown of the Big Lake, Good Harbor Bay, flanked by Whaleback and Pyramid Point, is breathtaking when laying on the sand at this expansive beach. Just south of Leland on M-22, take a right on Good Harbor Trail. A park pass is required as it is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (and no removal of stones is allowed). Bring your pooches for the "dogs welcome" side of the beach and make a campfire to satiate your s'more craving. It's the perfect beach to watch a Northern Michigan sunset.
If you're a local or have spent any time exploring Leelanau County, you know we've just scratched the surface with this list; we can't give away all of our secrets after all! That said, these beaches are some of the very best and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do. See you soon!
